As the world begins to return to “normal” after months of a worldwide shutdown due to COVID-19, perhaps you have taken the time to evaluate your life and to dream of new possibilities.
It may feel like a time for new beginnings because of job losses or changes. Perhaps you’ve wondered if this is the time to finally consider working overseas. If that is the case, here are 4 steps towards a new opportunity:
- Clarify your motivation to work overseas. If you are drawn to working overseas, travel might become more complicated than it has been in the past. Travel for fun or simply to have an adventure may be less attractive as we contemplate temperature checks, masks, and other safety measures being put in place. At the same time, the needs of the world have become even more evident. What motivates you to face the challenges of overseas life and travel?
- Contemplate your passions and skills. If you desire to step out and make a difference, this is going to be a great time to do so. Your unique combination of skills and love for people will be needed more than ever.
- Consider how much risk you are willing to face. While the world will begin to open up to travel and work overseas, COVID-19 may likely remain for a while. Those who serve overseas have always had to evaluate whether the risks involved are worth the cost. In the U.S. many of us have been largely protected from serious risk. That has changed with COVID-19 as we have faced many of the same challenges our brothers and sisters in other countries have faced. Many overseas workers chose to stay in their overseas assignment to show solidarity with their friends and neighbors. Others faced the risk of travel to the U.S. during the pandemic. What is your acceptable level of risk, remembering that taking risks often brings great reward?
- Consult your trusted advisors. Talk to those you most trust, those who know and love you most. Do they believe that you are ready to step into great opportunity with courage and faith? Do they see that you have the maturity to face the cultural and personal challenges that are part of overseas work and life? Conversations with your trusted advisors may clarify your desires and motivation to serve a world in need. IDEAS also provides onboard mentors to help you navigate next steps!
