Community development in a historic location

UNIQUE HERITAGE AND NATURAL BEAUTY

Argentina is the 2nd largest country in South America. Córdoba is located in the center of Argentina and is its 2nd largest city. It is also the only city in the world that boasts four world cultural heritage sites: the Mezquita Mosque and Cathedral, the Historic City Center, the Córdoba Patios, and the Palace Town of Medina Azahara.

Sending you a kiss!

Speaking the local language

Friendship is an important part of Argentinian culture. Argentinians generally greet each other with a kiss on the cheek and often end phone calls, chats, or emails by saying “te mando un beso” (“I’m sending you a kiss”).

The sounds of Franciscans and Dominicans

The city of bells

Córdoba hosts the largest number of universities in Argentina. It is nicknamed “the city of bells” because of the different Dominican and Franciscan churches that are located every few blocks.

IDEAS is developing exciting programs around Córdoba through Complejo Gilgal.

Argentinian milanesa is a meal that combines Argentina’s love for meat with its heavily Italian-influenced cuisine. It is thought to have come to Argentina with Italian immigrants between 1860-1920. Argentine Milanesa is seasoned with garlic and a little parsley and is often served with french fries or mashed potatoes.

FINDING SOLUTIONS
IN ARGENTINA

At IDEAS we work with local communities and partners to identify specific barriers to dignity that arise out of the cultural context. Together, we implement expert, programmatic solutions that result in appropriate and meaningful impact that serves the community as a whole.

CHALLENGES + OPPORTUNITIES

Feelings of hopelessness

Subsidies + devaluation lead to hopelessness

Many people in Bialet Masse, Córdoba depend on government subsidies for their livelihood. This dependence, alongside a consistent devaluation of the currency, contributes to a sense of hopelessness about the future for many of the youth.

Decentralized training

Meeting physical + spiritual needs where you are

Providing training and certifications to local people enables them to meet physical and spiritual needs. Building capacity builds sustainability and helps remove the barrier of discrimination.

Looking for something to do

A lack of opportunity can lead to unhealthy choices

Many teenagers and young adults are unable to find healthy ways to be social and have no places where they can practice sports outside the bigger cities. Many of these young people find themselves running the streets looking for something to do.

Creating life-giving spaces

More than a conference center

The renovation and development of our conference/community center provides a haven for young people where they can participate in sports and learn skills that will help them live healthy lives.

Complejo Gilgal is a community and retreat center in Córdoba, Argentina where churches, organizations, and individuals can come to recharge, connect, and be equipped in order to partner together in serving marginalized communities locally and globally.

Making space to reconnect with vision

We help equip leaders to reengage the work ahead.

The nearby communities of Córdoba have many families who are living in poverty, often without running water, daily access to food, and quality education. Along with physical brokenness, there are great emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual needs. Complejo Gilgal was created to leverage local and international churches and organizations, whose mission and vision is to assist these marginalized communities.

Stories of Transformation

Alma was born in Guatemala with a disability called spina bifida. Unable to walk, she spent the first 14 years of her life isolated, locked in a room, confined to a bed or the floor. Her mother said she was a mistake. Her father said she was not his daughter. Alma wanted to go to school and have friends, but her disability made that impossible.
