PROVIDING A MORE PROMISING FUTURE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

DIGNITY
EDUCATION CENTER

Our work at the Dignity Education Center provides education and life skills for underprivileged people in India.

India is world’s second-largest producer

India is a global center for tea production.

The Dignity Education Center is located in India. According to the caste system, Dalits have little or no status economically or socially. For five generations, many Dalits have been working in tea plantations without any future prospects or access to resources.

Challenging casteism as a barrier to dignity

Improving the quality of life for Dalits.

Dignity Education Center works to improve the quality of life for Tamil-speaking Dalits who've been working in tea plantations for five generations with few opportunities to improve their life situation due to casteism, oppression, and lack of services.

Guiding families towards holistic transformation

Life skills and training lead to jobs and respect in society.

The Dignity Education Center offers a range of opportunities for change and growth — including English teaching, academic tutoring, music classes, addiction recovery, and life skills training. Young people can graduate and find fulfilling jobs that will contribute to the welfare of their family and earn them respect in society. Together, we build meaningful connections: counseling and guiding families towards physical, emotional, and spiritual changes that will holistically transform their community.

Help support our work in India.

Government services in this area of India are minimal, including education. Expensive private schools provide inadequate teaching, especially to Dalit students who have the lowest social status in the culture. Workers in the tea industry receive low wages. Living quarters are unhealthy in the town and on the plantations. Families have conflict and duress due to their plight and their lack of hope. It’s amidst these challenges that IDEAS and our local partners are working.

Celebrating removing barriers to dignity

Alma was born in Guatemala with a disability called spina bifida. Unable to walk, she spent the first 14 years of her life isolated, locked in a room, confined to a bed or the floor. Her mother said she was a mistake. Her father said she was not his daughter. Alma wanted to go to school and have friends, but her disability made that impossible.
